Bruges, "Venice of the North"
Bruges is considered to be one of the most perfectly preserved medieval cities in Europe. It is relatively flat and easy to walk around—few cars are allowed. Instead, you’ll see bicycles and horses and buggies! After our boat ride down the canal, you’ll have free time for personal exploration—look for some authentic Belgium lace. In the 1850’s there were more than 10,000 lace-makers in Bruges, and lace boutiques abound.
A city that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bruges was named Cultural Capital of Europe in 2003. A walking tour in Bruges, past the swan-filled lake, will bring you to the central plaza.
The square is lined with cafes and architecturally fascinating gabled houses, with their colorful flower boxes and most unusual decorations. Like Venice, Bruges is a city of canals—stroll around the Dijver Canal across the stone bridge to the 13th century Church of Notre Dame to see Michelangelo’s marble sculpture of the Madonna and Child.
But don’t forget the incomparable chocolate of Bruges, the best we have ever tasted in Europe.
"Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. The finest
pre-trip presentation and preparation I have ever experienced. A more
wonderful tour leader, itinerary and group of fellow travelers could not be
found." |
