A Celebration of Light and Color : The Marmottan Museum

Today we have a special treat—the Marmottan Museum—“a hidden jewel” off the beaten path of most tourists! Located in the posh 16th arrondissement of Paris near the edge of the city, the Marmottan Museum was once a large residence. Surrounded by upscale parks, boutiques and cafés, the museum sits quietly, waiting for you to enter the world of Claude Monet.

The Marmottan’s collection of Monet paintings were donated by the artist’s son, and includes the famous “Impression Sunrise,” which gave its name to Impressionism. You probably read about the theft of this painting in 1985! Returned and carefully guarded, it is now on display in the museum.

A few other Impressionist painters are also represented here, but the spotlight is definitely on Monet. In addition, if you like illuminated manuscripts from the Medieval to Renaissance eras, check out the manuscript room on the first floor—unbelievably beautiful.

Also in this museum you will also find several rooms filled with luxurious, gorgeous antique furniture! After our museum visit, the remainder of the day will be free for personal exploration.

"Architecture, history, art, French culture--it was all there.  I loved it.  I would never have gotten to all this without the magnificent planning and execution of this tour."
